VIDEOGRAPHY
BALANCING THE LIFESTREAM OF NEURAL IMPULSES IN THE AGE OF VIDEO

Videography Lab Mission Statement - June 2010

To have common sense we must first have a sense of self. Our mission is to show how Modern Humans are losing  "sense of self" to political, religious and cultural pressure at an alarming rate. This "sense of self" has been expressed for tens of thousands of years by the root "vid", meaning "knowing" [specifically knowledge gained by direct witnessing]. The root "vid" is the linguistic ancestor of "video" and "vidya - veda" . . .  fundamental terms of philosophical and religious thought in Eastern and Western cultures.

In this site we compile evidence that Modern Humans, are now living in "The Age of Video" and that our brains are affected by more conflicting information than individuals are biologically prepared to process. We have spent 40 years contemplating this problem and now see the world at a tipping point. The answer to this dilemma is classic . . . "the truth will set us free".

The problem becomes: where does one find truth? Our journey began with the publication of our report in October 1972 for AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER, journal of the American Society of Cinematographers, entitled "VIDEOGRAPHY" What Does It All Mean?".

This original story/report/article [call it what you will] sparked a flurry of enthusiasm from video makers around the world, resulting today in nearly 12,000,000 web URLs that contain the word "videography". We now see through the lens of 40 years of technological transformation unparalled in human history, that we made mistakes in our original article. It is our goal to point them out and to correct them as accurately and quickly as possible.

At issue is the very title of the original article. Paraphrasing it: What does videography all mean? The definition that we originally stated was making "film-type productions using electronic image recording and electronic post production techniques". That definition seemed reasonable at the time. Now, in the 21ar Century it is a fractional representation of the meaning of "videography". In the days ahead we will continuously expand and document our quest for meaning that now leads us to believe that videography means something more. We ask for your patience as we make our case.
